according to the law,” he said. “The reporting system allows an avenue to document that event and have 811 folks here in the state take a look at how
to handle it best. It’s very clear and transparent, and the system is available to anyone. From a dispute resolution perspective, it works very well.”
He added that the main focus is to get people’s attention. If they don’t change their ways, the law provides for ways to hold them responsible in a fair and equitable way.
Damage Prevention Council
JD has been involved with the damage prevention council for years, but he said the COVID-19 pandemic has cut into some of their efforts, as in-person meetings have been canceled or moved online in the last two years.
“If I’m having a problem in my area or have an excavator with repeated issues, our damage prevention coordinator
is always available to call. There have been several times they’ve really helped move the situation forward,” JD said.
JD said he’s developed a great working relationship with MS811 over the
years, and that his respect for the
organization continues to grow. Jerry Kennemur, Mississippi 811 Damage Prevention Coordinator said, “JD is a great choice for Damage Prevention Champion because of his continuing efforts to promote safe digging and his willingness do what is right. He makes sure that locate tickets are called in; he uses the Positive Response Information System and promotes accountability for everyone involved. He is also supportive of my Damage Prevention meetings in Desoto County.”
“I believe they really respect us. They have been a good partner and want to do the right thing. I appreciate their willingness to pass rules and help with legislation that ultimately helps people who want to do the right thing,” he said.
Excavating tips from a pro
JD had a few pointers that he shared as a seasoned utility worker. First off, he knows nobody is perfect. But making an effort to work safer is always his number one priority.
“The biggest thing I want excavators to know is how concerned we are for their safety. We understand there’s
a real cost when someone makes a mistake in the field. Nobody’s perfect, including us, but we have a tremendous culture of safety at Northcentral, and want excavators and contractors in our area know that our culture of safety extends to them as well,” he said.
The importance of providing service
to the coop’s members is of course
the second thought on his mind after safety. Because in some ways, safety and electric service go hand-in-hand.
“I wish I could express how important it is to provide uninterrupted service
to our members. Whether it’s a small business, large business or someone working from home, their electric and Internet service is so vitally important to them. That’s why it’s so important for us to call before we dig,” he said.
“If you get on the scene and there’s something wrong, call back and give them an opportunity to locate — don’t just dig. Because that’s when people get hurt and when our members can be affected. Waiting a little longer today might inconvenience you, but tomorrow the shoe will be on the other foot. You’ll appreciate the extra time and understanding,” he said.
