Meetings Scheduled Across the State to Discuss Ideas for 2024 Legislation
Mississippi’s dig law has undergone many changes since 2008. From requiring membership in the early days to just this year extending the locate-by-time from 2 working days to 3 working days. Of course, other changes went into effect July 1, 2023, that by now most of you have discussed or been impacted by the changes.
Did you know that all the changes since 2008 were the direct result of the Mississippi Damage Prevention Committee? (MDPC) The heart and soul of the group was the willingness to meet face-to-face with other stakeholders to bring their perspectives, insight and experiences to the table. It was also obvious that progress toward this goal would be best made through a strong partnership that recognized the value of understanding and respecting different perspectives.
The MDPC supports Mississippi’s current underground facilities protection law. It recognizes that strengthening the state’s damage prevention program will require changes to the current law and that making such changes involves the legislative process. In all such efforts, it is the intent of the MDPC to involve all stakeholders to achieve consensus for the change.
Having said that, the MDPC is hosting a series of regional meetings across the state. You are invited to participate in ongoing discussions to address issues ranging from white lining to defining and enforcing large project tickets. We need your perspective and experiences to help us define what these look like and how to fairly enforce them. Of course, you will have topics you want to discuss as well and that’s the reason the MDPC is inviting you to attend.
We know that changes will take place, what the MDPC wants to do is ensure that the changes make a positive impact on your day-to-day workloads and in such a way that we do not lose sight of keeping Mississippi a safer place to live and work.
Hope to see you there!
